Artful Afternoon with Deborah Coffey

Deborah Coffey is a mixed media artist, educator and Mindfulness instructor who moved to Washington DC last year. Deborah has exhibited and taught art domestically and internationally throughout her career.

Her art emerges from “galvanized moments” when two or more forces or components converge at a startling juncture. (The instant that inspires her to respond.) For example, a fleeting, vivid shadow of a small tree is cast upon the trunk of a larger tree. As quickly as the sun brings the shadow, it moves it and erases the convergence — and she is inspired to create from the impression the convergence has left.

In this conversation, we will look at how these moments become the inspirations for her painting and mixed media, and how the materials used are integral to the telling and interpretation of impressions gathered. She works in mixed media because it allows her to create mysteries.
