Our Brain Health program continues! Each session can be attended as a standalone session or as part of our overall series of Brain Health events.
This week’s session will be led by Dr. Cathy Tompkins from the George Mason University Stronger Memory research team. Dr. Tompkins will present on the science behind building a stronger memory.
Studies have shown that the prefrontal cortex is activated in memory retrieval and is able to regulate memory retrieval in order to make decisions, problem solve, and plan for daily tasks. The three Stronger Memory exercises of simple math, reading aloud, and handwriting trigger greater brain activity in the prefrontal cortex and could support improvement in brain function.
These optional get-togethers are led by a Village moderator on zoom and give you the opportunity to ask questions and chat with others who are looking forward to positive change.
Dr. Cathy Tompkins is a gerontologist and has been in the Social Work Department at George Mason University since 2003. Her research is focused on normal aging and cognitive decline, dementia, dementia caregiving, and caregiving related to grandparent-headed households. Dr. Tompkins has been working as part of the Stronger Memory research team for over a year and oversees the project and the work of the project team.
